Peregrine is the brand name of J G Glover & Co Ltd, a British brand with a rich family history, dating back to 1796. When Thomas Glover started as a hand frame knitter in Wigston, Leicester. Throughout the companies history it has faced many ups and downs with the industrial revolution of the 19th century, bringing great change to the textile industry, as production became mechanized. J G Glover went from a cottage industry to a mechanized factory with a full production line, which was sold across the UK and later into Europe.

At the start of the 20th century the companies’ direction and focus was forced in other directions, as conflict spread across Europe. The production line changed to supply the men on the front line with wool clothing as they braved the elements.

Following the Great War, John George Glover returned from Europe and once again changed the direction of the company, exporting their production into America and other far afield countries.

By the mid-20th century J. G. Glover employed over 300 people, manufacturing under their brand Peregrine as well as for the growing UK department stores. However, by the 1980’s UK manufacturing was under severe threat from cheaper imports, as production was moved overseas.

By the turn of the 21st century the UK textile industry was almost extinct, with a generation of skilled workforce lost.

The company held onto its values and continued to export to pockets of customers from different corners of the world who still valued the made in England label. Today the company employs a small team of skilled machinists and knitters, working closely alongside the creative team that has built the Peregrine brand of today.
